Junk car removal in Chatham, block by block
Chatham is one of the South Side’s bungalow neighborhoods, and that shapes almost every junk car pickup here. It takes in several smaller neighborhoods: Chatham-Avalon, Chatham Club, Chesterfield, East Chatham, West Chatham and the northern part of West Chesterfield. It’s part of the same junk car removal across Chicago we do everywhere else, with the same free towing.
Getting around: the Red Line has stations at 79th and 87th Streets in Chatham, and the Metra Electric line runs along the neighborhood’s eastern edge with stops at 79th, 83rd and 87th. Those two lines, plus 79th and 87th Streets, are the easiest landmarks to give a driver.
Two historic districts show what the housing is like. The West Chatham Bungalow Historic District covers 79th to 82nd Street between Stewart and Perry Avenues: 283 Chicago bungalows built between 1913 and 1930. The Garden Homes Historic District sits between 87th and 89th Streets, from Wabash to Indiana Avenue. Bungalow blocks mean detached garages on the alley, narrow side yards, and street parking out front. That’s where Chatham’s junk cars sit.
Pickup notes for Chatham
- Car in the garage behind the house? Say whether the garage door opens onto the alley, whether the car rolls, and whether anything is stored in front of it. Detached garages on older lots can be tight. If you can, measure the door.
- Car on a side street? Give the nearest cross street at 79th or 87th, or say which Red Line or Metra stop it’s closest to. A driver finds “a block south of 83rd, west side of the street” faster than a house number.
- Car on a parking pad off the alley? Tell us which end of the alley is easier to enter, and whether garbage carts or a neighbor’s car usually block it.
- Car hasn’t moved in months? Flat tires and a stuck parking brake are common. See non-running car removal for what to check before we call.
What happens next
Send the form with the year, make, model and whether you have the title. We call you with an offer. How junk car removal works has every step. If you say yes, the truck comes to the car, the driver checks it matches what you described, you show your paperwork and you’re paid at pickup. No title in hand? We can still help. Tell us which papers you’ve got, like a bill of sale, the registration or an insurance card. Illinois rules set which of them a scrap sale can use, and we’ll tell you where you stand on the call.
Street pickups on a busy block go smoother when the driver knows the layout, so read how junk car towing works if the car is somewhere awkward. Neighbors in Auburn Gresham or Greater Grand Crossing? We cover other South Side neighborhoods too.
