Junk car removal in South Shore, by the lake
South Shore runs from 67th Street to 79th Street, and from Stony Island Avenue east to Lake Michigan. It’s one of the most densely populated neighborhoods on the South Side, and Lake Shore Drive is close by. We pick up all over it as part of junk car removal across Chicago: free towing, and you’re paid at pickup.
Density is the part that matters for a tow. A lot of South Shore lives in apartment and courtyard buildings, so junk cars here sit in rear lots, shared garages and on packed streets rather than in a private driveway. The Jeffery-Cyril Historic District is a good example: six apartment buildings built between 1927 and 1929 on Jeffery Boulevard, 71st Place and Cyril Avenue. At the other end of the scale, the Jackson Park Highlands District, between 67th and 71st Streets from Cregier to Jeffery, is a district of houses that has been a Chicago Landmark since 1989.
The landmark everyone knows is the South Shore Cultural Center, the old South Shore Country Club, which the Park District bought in 1972. The Metra Electric South Chicago Branch is the other big one: it runs down the median of 71st Street, with stops at Stony Island, Bryn Mawr and South Shore, then turns along Exchange Avenue with stops at Windsor Park and Cheltenham.
Pickup notes for South Shore
- On 71st Street? The tracks run down the middle, so tell us which side of 71st the car is on and the nearest cross street.
- Apartment or courtyard building? Say where the car is: the street out front, a rear lot, or a garage. If a gate or a garage door has to be opened by a building manager, line that up before pickup.
- Shared lot? If another resident’s car blocks yours, ask them to move it first. The driver can’t move someone else’s car.
- Street parking on a packed block? The truck may need to stop alongside for a few minutes. Tell us about any parking restrictions on your block.
- Car won’t start or roll? That’s fine. Read non-running car removal for what the driver needs to know.
How it goes
Send the year, make, model and title status through the form. We call you with an offer. The truck comes to the car, the driver checks it matches, you show your paperwork and you’re paid at pickup. No title in hand? We can still help. Tell us which papers you’ve got, like a bill of sale, the registration or an insurance card. Illinois rules set which of them a scrap sale can use, and we’ll tell you where you stand on the call. Same-day pickup is often possible.
The car that’s giving you trouble is somewhere awkward? How junk car towing works covers lots and garages in detail. Next door in Woodlawn or Greater Grand Crossing? We cover other South Side neighborhoods too.
