Is junk car removal free?

Junk car removal is usually free to the seller, because the buyer pays for the tow out of what the car is worth to them. With Cars Junk Man it's free, full stop. No towing charge comes out of your offer. The catch with some buyers isn't a fee on the quote. It's a smaller number at the curb.

By Cars Junk Man. Updated .

You search “junk car removal” and every result says free. Then a friend tells you they got charged. Both can be true. Here’s how the money works, so you know what you’re agreeing to before a truck shows up. It’s written for Chicago junk car removal, but the logic holds anywhere.

Does junk car removal cost anything?

Usually not, because junk car buyers pay for the tow out of what the car is worth to them. With Cars Junk Man, junk car removal is free: no towing charge is taken out of your offer. The thing to check with any buyer is simple. Is the amount quoted the amount you're paid at pickup?

A junk car is worth money to a buyer. It has metal, and often parts someone wants. A tow truck, a driver and fuel cost money too. A buyer that pays you for the car and sends a truck has already done the math: the offer is what’s left after they cover their costs. That’s why “free removal” is normal in this business. The tow is priced in.

Where a removal fee can hide

If towing is supposedly free, how do people end up paying? Usually one of these:

A separate towing charge. The quote is one number, and then at the curb there’s a line for towing. This one is at least visible. Ask about it on the phone and it can’t surprise you.

A lower number at the curb. More common, and harder to spot. The phone quote is high, and when the truck arrives the driver finds reasons to cut it: flat tires, no keys, the car is in the alley, “the catalytic converter looks wrong.” Some of those can be fair if you described the car wrong. Many aren’t.

A charge for a hard pickup. Garage, backyard, no keys, won’t roll. Some buyers treat those as extras.

“Free removal” with no payment. Some services will haul a car away for nothing, and pay nothing either. That’s removal, not a sale. If the car is worth something, you just gave it away.

With Cars Junk Man, none of those apply to the tow. Towing is free, and nothing is taken off your offer for it. What you tell us about the car still matters, which is why the next section exists.

Five questions to ask before you accept an offer

  1. Is towing included, and is anything deducted for it? You want a plain yes and no.
  2. Is this the amount I’m paid at pickup? Not “up to,” not “about.” The number.
  3. What would change the offer? A fair buyer will tell you: the car not matching the description, missing parts you didn’t mention, paperwork problems.
  4. When and how am I paid? With us it’s at pickup, before the truck leaves, by Zelle, Cash App, another digital payment or cash.
  5. How long does the offer stand? Some buyers put a clock on it. Ours has no expiry date.

Ask all five with any buyer, including us.

What actually changes an offer

Not the tow. The car.

  • Year, make and model. The basics that set the starting point.
  • Condition. Wrecked, dead, stripped, burned, flooded. Say what’s wrong.
  • Missing parts. If the engine, the catalytic converter, the wheels or the battery are gone, say so up front. Leaving it out is how a number changes at the curb.
  • Paperwork. A title is best. No title in hand? We can still help. Tell us which papers you’ve got, like a bill of sale, the registration or an insurance card. Illinois rules set which of them a scrap sale can use, and we’ll tell you where you stand on the call.

Describe the car honestly and the number holds. That’s the whole trick.

Where the car sits doesn’t cost you extra

Curb, alley, driveway, garage, backyard. Some pickups take longer than others, and none of them cost you a towing charge with Cars Junk Man. Telling us where the car is and what’s around it just helps the right truck come the first time. See how junk car towing works for what the driver needs.

Ready?

The form takes a minute: year, make, model and title status, then your name, phone and where the car is. Ask for your offer, or read what happens at pickup first.

Quick answers

How much money do you get for junking a car?
It depends on the car, its condition and whether you have the paperwork. We don't publish prices because two cars of the same model can be worth different amounts. Send the details and we'll make you an offer, with towing free on top.
What is the best way to get rid of a junk car?
Sell it to a buyer who picks it up. You get paid, the car leaves, and you don't have to find a way to move a car that doesn't run. Get the offer in writing or by phone before the truck comes, and ask the questions on this page.
Do I have to pay if the car doesn't run?
No. A dead car is towed the same way, and towing is free with Cars Junk Man either way.
Does the offer change at pickup?
It shouldn't, if the car matches what you told us. The driver checks the year, make, model and condition you described. Describe it honestly, including missing parts, and the number holds.
