Junking a car with no keys, flat tires or no way out

Yes, you can junk a car without the keys, with flat tires, or with the car boxed in. None of it stops a sale. It changes how the car gets onto the truck, so the one thing that matters is telling the buyer up front. With Cars Junk Man, towing is free either way, and you're paid at pickup.

By Cars Junk Man. Updated .

A car that sat for two years usually has all the problems at once. Keys lost, tires flat, battery dead, brakes rusted, and a neighbor’s car parked tight against the bumper. This page takes them one at a time. It’s the practical side of Chicago junk car removal: what we need to know so the right truck shows up.

Can you junk a car without the keys?

Yes. Most junk cars can be sold and towed without keys, because the car is loaded onto a truck without being driven. Tell the buyer there are no keys when you ask for the offer, because locked steering or a car stuck in park changes how it's loaded. Ownership is proven by the title, not the key.

No keys: what changes on the truck

Two things lock up on many cars when there’s no key.

The steering. With the key out, the steering wheel on a lot of cars locks after it’s turned. The front wheels stay pointed wherever they were. If they’re pointed straight, easy. If they’re cranked to one side, the car drags sideways as it’s pulled.

The transmission. An automatic left in park, with no key to turn the ignition, usually can’t be shifted to neutral the normal way. The rear or front wheels won’t turn freely. The car can still be loaded. It takes more time and more pulling.

So when you send the form, say “no keys.” If you know which way the wheels are pointed and whether the car was left in park, even better.

And if you have the keys somewhere, find them. Even a car that won’t start is easier to load with a key in it.

Flat or missing tires

A car that sat through a few Chicago winters often has one or more flat tires. Flat tires still roll, badly. Tires that are missing, with the car sitting on its rims or on blocks, don’t roll at all.

What to tell us: how many tires are flat, whether any are missing, and whether the car is up on blocks or a jack. Don’t buy new tires to make it roll. It won’t be worth it.

Stuck in park or brakes seized

Brakes rust when a car sits, especially outside. The parking brake is the usual culprit: set once, never released, and now it won’t let go. A car with seized brakes won’t roll even in neutral.

You can’t always tell until someone tries. If it’s safe, put the key in (if you have it), foot on the brake, shift to neutral, release the parking brake and see whether the car moves when pushed. Doesn’t budge? That’s fine. Tell us, and the driver plans to winch it.

Blocked in, or in a tight garage

This is where most pickups go sideways, and it’s usually not the car’s fault.

  • Boxed in by other cars. A neighbor’s car tight against your bumper, or a car parked across the alley end of your pad. Ask the owners to move them before pickup time. A driver can’t move someone else’s car.
  • Tight garage. Older detached garages behind bungalows and two-flats can have narrow doors and not much room on either side. Measure the door if you can, clear anything stored in front of the car, and say whether it’s nose-in or tail-in.
  • Backyard or side yard. Tell us how wide the gap is, whether a gate has to come off, and whether the ground is soft.
  • Behind a locked gate. Whoever has the key or the remote needs to be there, or leave it open.

What to tell us when you ask for an offer

  1. Keys or no keys.
  2. Whether it rolls in neutral, and whether the parking brake releases.
  3. How many tires are flat or missing.
  4. Where it sits: street, alley, driveway, garage, yard, lot.
  5. What’s around it: other cars, a gate, a low door, soft ground.
  6. Your paperwork: the title, or if there’s no title, what papers you do have (bill of sale, registration, insurance card). Illinois rules set which of them a scrap sale can use, and we’ll tell you where you stand on the call.

That’s it. Towing is free, and you’re paid at pickup. If the car has been sitting on the street for a while, check Chicago’s abandoned car rules so the city doesn’t get to it first.

Quick answers

Can you legally junk a car without a title?
The title matters more than the keys, because the title is what proves the car is yours. No title in hand? We can still help. Tell us which papers you've got, like a bill of sale, the registration or an insurance card. Illinois rules set which of them a scrap sale can use, and we'll tell you where you stand on the call.
How far can a car be moved with no keys?
It doesn't need to move on its own at all. A car with no keys is loaded onto the truck without being driven, usually after being pulled or winched from where it sits.
Is it better to junk or scrap a car?
For most people it's the same thing from their side. You sell the car, it's towed away, and what happens to it after is the buyer's business. What matters to you is the offer and whether the tow is free.
Do you charge more for a car with no keys?
No towing charge, ever. Towing is free with Cars Junk Man. Tell us there are no keys when you ask for the offer so the number and the pickup plan are right from the start.
